PURPOSE:To obtain an ECD giving a clear display and having a long life by interposing a unidirectional porous body between a pair of electrode substrates. CONSTITUTION:In an electrochromic display element provided with a pair of electrode substrates 1, 2 holding an electrolytic soln. 5 prepared by dissolving a display material enabling electrochemically reversible color development and erasion and a supporting electrolyte, a nearly white unidirectional porous body 6 having permeability only in the thickness direction of the sheet is interposed between the substrates 1, 2. Since the EC material is colorless and transparent before applying voltage to the panel, the display part assumes the white color of the porous body 6. When negative voltage is applied to the display electrode, the EC material such as methylviologen is reduced at the side of the display electrode to develop a blue color. The material having the developed color diffuses from the electrode surface, yet it diffuses only in the longitudinal direction because of the unidirectional property of the porous body 6. Accordingly, the display part has high concn. of the coloring dye, and the contrast is hardly lowered by the diffusion of the dye. |
