For precise positioning of the pivoting fork support of a high-shelf stacker (fork-lift truck), each shelf compartment is provided with a code mark having a bar pattern (pattern of lines) for positioning in a first direction and a bar (mark) at right angles thereto which is imaged on a light-emitting diode matrix (7). The matrix is interrogated continuously and the values obtained are stored and compared in a comparator (10) with stored code bar patterns until correspondence with a required bar pattern is found, whereupon coarse positioning takes place. Fine positioning with respect to a specific bar in the pattern is carried out by means of a second comparator (11) and fine positioning is finally carried out by means of a third comparator (12), using the vertical bar in the direction at right angles to the first direction. <IMAGE>
