PURPOSE:To permit the display of what number of letter is being set at present or how many letters can be set thereafter all the time for an operator, by a method in which each time letters are stored, the number of letter to be set next or the number of settable letters thereafter is displayed on an arithmetic control part. CONSTITUTION:When a power source switch 3 is turned ON and a function selecting key 7 is operated to condition a printer to a preset state, an arithmetic control portion 20 supplies a signal to each of displayers 9-11 through a display interface 25, whereby display is made as shown in (a). The 01 displayed on section E is a set letter number to show the presetting of the first letter of a name, and the set letter number is obtained by counting the set times of letters in the arithmetic control part, for example. In section G, 6 is displayed and in section H, 11 is displayed, showing that 6 capital letters and 11 small letters can be set on one line.
