Dihydro- and tetrahydromonacolin L, of the general formula (I> wherein X stands for-CH=CH- or -CH2-CH2- and derivatives thereof of formula where Y is a metal cation or an alkyl group have cholesterol-reducing activity, making them useful as hyperlipemia treating agents. Dihydromonacolin L can be prepared by cultivation of a microorganism of the genus Monascus. The other compounds can be prepared by synthesis from dihydromonacolin L.
