PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of a catalyst used and to improve economic efficiency, by dividedly adding a Raney nickel catalyst, in obtaining the titled compound by reducing an aromatic azoxy compound in an alkali metallic hydroxide, water and a surface active agent by dripping hydrazine. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic azoxy compound shown by the formula (X is -H, -Cl, -OCH3 and -CH3) as a raw material is reduced with hydrazine hydrate in the presence of an alkali metallic hydroxide or alkali earth metallic hydroxide, water and a small amount of a surface active agent (preferably anionic surface active agent, such as alkylbenzenesulfonate, etc.) by dividedly adding a Raney nickel catalyst plural times to give the aimed compound. Although the amount of the catalyst used is 0.5-5g based on 1mol raw material compound shown by the formula in the case of addition at a time, the amount of the catalyst is 50-60% the amount used in the addition at a time in the case of divided addition. The reaction temperature is preferably 50-80 deg.C. |
