The invention relates to a process and to a device for producing composites from expandable mineral raw materials such as clay, which are filled in a granulated and, if appropriate, pre-expanded form into an enclosure, prefabricated in the manner of consumable form work, consisting of a screen- or grid-like material and subjected to a flow of hot gases in a compression chamber. The heating is continued up to incipient melting of the granule surfaces, an expanding step being initiated at the same time, by means of which the granules are combined, filling the voids, to give a body of homogeneous structure and are permanently bonded to the grid-like enclosure by means of the incipiently melted surfaces. In the case of tubular hollow bodies, inner and outer enclosure and radial flow through the enclosure provided with the filling are provided.
