This container has cylindrical shell plates (1) and at least one stiffening ring (3; 3a ...; 3') arranged inside the shell plates. Furthermore, the container has at least one supporting structure which can be loaded only in compression relative to the shell plates (1). The supporting structure can be designed as a compression strut which is arranged in the plane of the stiffening rings and diametrically in them and is supported relative to the stiffening ring at least at one end in such a way that it can only be loaded in compression. But the supporting structure can also be represented by the stiffening rings (3) themselves when they are in contact with the shell plates (1) in such a way that they can only be loaded in compression. In the axial direction, these stiffening rings (3) are loosely mounted between two struts (2a, 2b, 2c) fastened to the shell plates (1). These stiffening rings (3) can consist of at least two segments (3a ...) provided with one splice plate (11 ... 16) each at their ends, two adjacent segments (3b, 3c) having a stop (17; 18). Upon assembly of the stiffening rings (3), the ends of the segments (3a ...) - with the exception of the ends provided with stops (17, 18) - are connected with their splice plates (11 ... 16), the ends provided with the stops (17; 18) are pressed apart, and the gap between the pressed-apart ends is filled with distance plates (20).
