Prodn. of shaped refractory prods. for lining steel making vessels (converters, electric furnaces, etc.) is carried out by (a) mixing a granular refractory material, e.g. calcined magnesite or dolomite, with a binder such as "pitch tar" (i.e. coal-tar pitch cutback with light coke-over tar distillate); (b) adding an opt. substd. carbohydrate (I) capable of inhibiting sagging and/or spalling of the finished lining during heat-up; and (c) shaping the mixt. without subsequent heat treatment. Addn. of (I) increases the compressive strength of the shaped prods. (e.g. bricks) in the temp. range where the strength is normally at a min. (150-400 deg.C) and eliminates the need for heat treatment.
|
