In a device for the temporary clamping of sheet-shaped material (12) on a conveyor chain (11) with an underlay part (215) attached to the conveyor chain and having a support surface (213) for the material, a clamping part (224) which is mounted on the underlay part and is movable between a carrying position and a release position, a clamping head (218) attached to the clamping part and a spring element (222) acting on the clamping head, it is proposed, to achieve in a simple manner a self-locking of the clamping part (224) on the underlay part (215), for the clamping part (224) to be movable relative to the clamping head (218) and the spring element (222) to act between the clamping head and the clamping part such that the movement, achievable by an external actuating force, of the clamping part from the release position into the carrying position leads to an increasing tensioning of the spring element (22) after contact of the clamping head (18) with the material (12). This results in a tilting of the clamping part (224) into a guide opening (226) of the underlay part (215) to form a self-locking frictional connection between the two parts. <IMAGE>
