Lorry automatic tailboard opening device - has cord passed round pulley system operated by hydraulic cylinder

The automatic opening and closing mechanism for tailboards on tipper lorries has a handle in the driver's cabin. This operates a valve to take pressure from the hydraulic tipper pump to an hydraulic cylinder (1) whose piston rod (2) is connected to a pair of pulleys (3). A cord (12) runs round a pulley system (3) and has its end fixed to a point (6) on the tailboard (10). The piston needs only to rise a small distance in relation to the drop of the tailboard. In the closed position the tailboard is held in place by a latch (7) which is opened by a cam rod (5) fitted to the piston rod (5).
