An internal combustion engine with spark ignition is described, the load of which is controlled by adjusting the piston stroke, as a result of which the displacement is matched to the required engine power. The friction losses decline with a decreasing piston stroke that is a diminishing load. Furthermore, the charge cycle losses and throttle losses do not increase as the load diminishes, as a result of which the mechanical efficiency is maintained. In this method of load control compression pressure and mean pressure, and hence also the thermodynamic efficiency, remain approximately constant throughout the load range. Similar ratios are thereby created as in the diesel engine with mixture control, the friction losses of which, however, are higher especially at partial load. This new engine concept thereby leads, throughout the partial load range, to a substantially lower fuel consumption than in engines with known charge control. Improved combustion of the mixture with complete charging of the respective capacity also results in a reduction of the pollutant emissions.
