PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having high retentivity, by forming ferromagnetic metal or an amorphous substance of the metal oxide or nitride and said composition which has particular columnar or acicular structure and shows ferromagnetism at a constant temperature on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:For example, iron bromide whose main components are FeBr2 and FeBr3 as powder 20 is put into a bubbler 29 which is retained at 0-20 deg.C. Hydrogen as carrier gas is shunted through a valve 34. For example, 13.56MHz high frequency energy is applied from a source 5 to capacity coupling electrodes 3, 4. The iron bromide emitted from a nozzle 28 becomes activated iron, further being pinched by 10<2>-5X10<3> gausss magnetic fields 6, 7 in an excitation compartment 2.
