PURPOSE:To manufacture silicon carbide with superior productivity by packing an electrically conductive crucible with mixed starting material consisting of silica sand and coke and heating the material with an induction heating coil. CONSTITUTION:A frame 9 made of refractory cement holding an embedded induction heating coil 10 is set on a table 8 made of refractory brick, and a crucible 12 made of electrically conductive material such as graphite is placed at the inside of the frame 9 with a heat insulator 11 in-between. The crucible 12 is packed with a mixture 3 of silica with coke as starting materials. By electrifying the coil 10, the crucible 12 is heated with the induced current, and the internal starting materials are heated and reacted to form a silicon carbide crystal layer 6. since the contact area of the crucible 12 as a heat source for the reaction with the starting materials 3 is large, the materials 3 are heated rapidly, the rate of the silicon carbide forming reaction is increased, and the productivity is enhanced. |
