Figure 1 shows an electric lighter which, by means of a metal sleeve (10), can be fastened on the dashboard of a motor vehicle and has an ignition plug (14) which exhibits an actuating button (26) at one end and a resistance-heated incandescent plate (22) at the other end. Within the sleeve (10), the ignition plug (14) can be displaced from a rest position into a heating-up position and is held in the heating-up position counter to the force of a compression spring (68). In this arrangement, the incandescent-plate resistance (22), which is constantly connected to a pole of the voltage source which preferably has mass potential, is connected to the other pole of the voltage source via a spring contact (44). The compression spring (68) and a thermal cut-out, which comprises a bimetallic element (60) and a contact bridge (54) and interrupts the heating circuit after the predetermined temperature has been reached, are arranged in the end region of the sleeve (10). The driver holds the ignition plug (14) pressed in for only a few seconds and is thus not distracted for an unnecessarily long period of time.
