A magnetic stirrer or agitator consists of a plate or slab (9), on which the vessel (3) contg. a magnetic stirring bar (2) may be seated, the slab contains pole pairs having energising windings which can be energised to varying extents to change the magnetic field. At least one pole pair, as viewed in plan, has pole shoes (8) which are of elongated form pointing towards the centre. The other pole pairs may have a similar form or, alternatively, the other pole pairs may have a wider, circular-sector form. In partic., those poles which point towards the centre have the general form of an acute-angled triangle or water droplet (8). With all arrangements, the opposite poles of a pair may be joined by a U-shaped bar (4), on which the energising coils (6) are mounted. Used for the contactless stirring of liquids or mixtures.
