PURPOSE:To prevent an ink from bleeding upon recording, ensure excellent water resistance of a paper itself and prevent the ink from bleeding when the paper is wetted after recording, by incorporating a quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid into recording paper. CONSTITUTION:A quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid can be synthesized from alginic acid or an alginate and a quaternary ammonium compound. As alginic acid, a commercial one having a molecular weight of 10000-500000 may be used, while the alginate is ordinarily preferably a sodium salt. As the quaternary ammonium compound, is selected such one that the quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid formed therefrom is soluble in an organic solvent or in an at least about 50% aqueous solution of an organic solvent. For exam ple, the quaternary ammonium compound may be a lauryltrimethylammonium salt or the like, and the anion constituting the compound is suitably a halide ion such as chloride ion, sulfate ion, nitrate ion, phosphate ion or the like. Recording paper can be produced by providing a paper with a solution of the quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid in the organic solvent or at least about 50% aqueous solution of the organic solvent by spraying, coating, immer sion or impregnation, followed by removing the solvent. |
