Application of liquid to a variable width filamentary cigarette tow band wherein liq. is fed at a constant rate by one or more positive displacement pumps to a disc or brush type applicator 31 device. Excess liq. not picked up by the tow drains from the ceiling 27 of the applicator housing into end channels 27a and then back to the applicator via side channels 29 and gutter 29a (Fig. 3). Variations in the width of the tow band do not change tow liquid pick-up from a preselected weight level.
