PURPOSE:To rerecord picture information in the form of picture information shorter than the original picture information, by comparing the length information on the length recording area of picture information with that of new picture information, and by recording the new picture information according to the result of the comparison. CONSTITUTION:According to input information from input equipment 2, a controller 1 performs editing processing and control with regard to the recording, reproduction, addition, insertion, deletion, etc., of retrieval titles. Picture information 5 of a document, etc., is converted photoelectrically by a two-dimenional scanner 6 and the conversion result is supplied to a CRT display 7, recorder 8 or magnetic tape 9. The recorder 8 receives the picture information from the scanner 6 and makes it into a two-dimensional visible picture, which is outputted as a hard copy 10.
