1,169,494. Mixing and aeration of liquids. AFICO S.A. 21 March, 1968 [13 April, 19671, No.13613/68. Heading B1C. [Also in Division C6] A foam destruction device for a reaction vessel comprises a chamber within the vessel having an upper opening, a lower opening, an upwardly and outwardly flared interior wall and a base, and a rotatable impeller disposed within or below the base of the chamber; the perimeter of the upper opening is above the normal level of liquid in the reaction vessel during operation so that no bulk liquid flows from the outside of the chamber to the inside. The impeller may be a propeller 3, Fig. 1, mounted on a tubular shaft 4 rotated independently of a shaft 5 for a stirrer (not shown), or a lifter turbine 12, Fig. 2. Deflectors 15 direct the flow of foam towards the interior of the funnel. The gap e, Fig. 1, separating the funnel from the wall of vessel is between 0.10 and 0.15 the interior diameter of the vessel. Mention is made of the fermentation or culture of aerobic microorganisms on liquid or semi-liquid substrates. |
