<p>octan-6-one derivs. (I) and 3,6,8-trioxo-(3,2,1) octan-4-one derivs. (II) are new (where R is opt. branched 2-18C alkyl opt. carrying further gps., or opt. substd. aryl or araliphaticyl; R is pref. the residue of an essential amino acid precursor R-CO-COOH). (I) and (II) are prepd. by reacting an alpha-keto-carboxylic acid deriv. of the formula R-CO-COOH (III) or an ester, ketal ester, halide or comparable deriv. thereof with glycerol or with a glycerol deriv. which releases the glycerol residue at a reaction temp. below 160 deg.C which gives a sufficient reaction rate, in the presence of an acidic catalyst, the resulting mixt. of (I) and (II) opt. being sepd. into the pure components. (I) and (II) are useful as intermediates for pharmaceuticals. Ine one molecule, they combine the features of an alpha-keto carboxylic acid (which can be metabolised to the corresp. alpha-amino acid) and of glycerine (which is involved in carbohydrate metabolism) with the advantage of surprising stability on storage; they can thus be used in human and veterinary medicine in connection with amino acid metabolism, as well as as foodstuff components for humans, animals and microorganisms. (I) and (II) can additionally be used as a stable storage form of amino acids.</p> |
