The coal containing gangue is worked off the stope (1) and deposited on a conveyor (2). A breaker (7) reduces the material to the required size and transports it into a tank containing a separating fluid (4) in which the lighter coal floats to the surface and the heavier gangue drops to the bottom. Inside the tank a closed conveyor belt is fitted, the upper strand carrying the coal pieces, which are subjected to vibrations and/or blowing effects and are subsequently deposited on a conveyor belt (9). The gangue part of the material is collected on the lower strand of the closed conveyor by a scraper collector and transported by a pneumatic- or mechanical conveying device (6) into the empty space (3) behind the stope.
