PURPOSE:To increase the charge-and-discharge cycle life of a battery, which is constituted by using an expanded metal as a grid, by restricting both the concentration of sulfuric acid remaining in the electrolyte at the last stage of the dischange, and the amount of the positive active material to given values. CONSTITUTION:A lead acid battery includes a positive and a negative acid which are an expanded metal made of lead or a lead alloy. The sulfuric acid concentration of the electrolyte at the last stage of the discharge (at below 0.2c) is restricted to below 20wt%. An excess of an active material is used so that the conclusion of the capacity of a negative electrode coincides with the conclusion of the capacity of the battery. As a result, the deterioration of the capacity which is due to insufficient binding of the plate to the grid can be restricted and reduced. Besides, the above deterioration can further be reduced since the negative electrode determines the battery capacity. Consequently, the charge-and-discharge cycle life of the battery can be greatly increased. |
