摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a battery of a low cost, a large capacity density, and a good liquid leakage resistance, which has an anode made of lead dioxide and a cathode made of zinc, by using a caustic alkali solution containing sulfate ions as either the anode-side electrolyte only or both the anode- side and the cathode-side electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:An anode mixture 3, which is made of lead dioxide used as a main active material and is added with graphite, is compressed and packed into an anode case 1. A separator 5 consisting of a grafted polyethylene, and cellophane or the like, a liquid holding material 6 made of nonwoven cloth, and a zinc cathode 4 made up of an amalgamated zinc and carboxymethylcellulose are placed over the anode mixture 3, and the whole constitutes a battery. An alkaline solution of a low concentration, which contains sulfate ions, is used as either the anode-side electrolyte only or both the anode-side and the cathode-side electrolyte. When the separator 5 is prepared from a semipermeable membrane such as cellophane, a caustic alkali solution usually used for an alkaline battery may be used as the cathode-side electrolyte. As a compound which gives sulfate ions, sodium sulfate or potassium sulfate is used. Consequently, the solubility of lead dioxide contained in the battery can be reduced by making the molar concentration of the former caustic alkali solution 0.5-3.0, and the preservation characteristic of the battery can be further enhanced by making the concentration of the former sulfate ions 0.05-0.5mol.
