Sponge Fe was made in a rotary furnace by direct redn. of oxidic Fe ore pellets, using as reductant a solid carbonaceous material contg. 30-70wt.% moisture and a high volatile content. Thus, a rotary furnace was charged with lignite of 55% moisture and Fe ore pellets of 67% Fe content. In the cha ge the C/Fe ratio was 0,4. The necessary heat was generated by combustion of the carbonaceous reductant which contained C 44, volatiles 50, and ash 6% on dry basis. The furnace was charged at the rate of 250kg/h and a 90% Fe metalization was obtained. The drying zone of the furnace was kept at 750≦̸C, the solids in this zone were at 330≦̸C. In the redn. zone of the furnace the temp. was kept at 1020≦̸C, imparting a solids temp. of 930≦̸C.
