An essentially spherical smelting furnace 22 includes a carbon-lined smelting crucible 80. The interior of the smelting crucible is sealed in relation to the atmosphere outside, and a vacuum pump 68 and a venturi arrangement 72 control the atmosphere in the smelting crucible by removing oxygen therefrom. A feed lock 58 allows a material supply to the smelting crucible without interaction with the atmospheric control of the smelting furnace, and a tap hole 30 close to the lower part of the smelting crucible makes it possible to remove smelted material 90. In the production of mineral wool insulation, slag is conveyed to the smelting crucible for smelting, and the smelted slag 90 from the tap hole 30 is delivered to a fibre-forming arrangement 34. <IMAGE> |
