Automatic control of the degree of exposure of continuous sheet passing through a chamber for a treatment which promotes contraction of the material and hence an increase in the tension in the sheet, by monitoring the degree of tension and making corresponding adjustments to the relative positions of guide rollers to vary the path length. Esp. for treating textiles to ammonia vapour from a tray of liquid NH3 supported alongside the textile path through a vapour sealed chamber, to vary the degree of exposure to compensate for variations in fabric thickness or density and generate a uniform degree of fibres contraction. A simpler and more responsive technique for controlling the degree of exposure than systems based on changing drive motor speeds for the rolls transporting the sheet through the chamber.
