Title compds. (I; R1 = H, alkyl; X = -Y-R2; R2 = H, aryl, alkyl; Y = O, S), useful as herbicides and plant growth regulators, were prepd. by the reaction of II and III, or V and IV(R3 and R4 are H, C1-18 alkyl, C2-8 alkenyl, C3-8 aliphatic hydrocarbon, aryl). Thus, 33.4 g 4-methyl-1,2,3-thiadiazole-5,-5-carboxylic ethylester and sodium chloride were reacted in 3N-methanol at room temp for 16 hr to give 25.9 g 4-methyl-1,2,3-thiadiazole-5-carboxylic acid.
