The seal is housed in the casing (2) of the gearbox. It has a fixed sleeve (18) prevented from rotating by a dowel (20) which permits a small axial movement. The rotating part of the seal (6) is fixed to the shaft by a grub screw (8) and maintains the assembly in place. The two hardened faces (14,16) are maintained in contact by the spring (28). Oil passes through the annular space (5) and fills the internal cavities of the seal. When the shaft rotates centrifugal force causes the oil to lubricate the friction faces.
