Anhydrous trioxane is polymerized using oxalic acid as catalyst to produce E-polyoxymethylene. The concentration of oxalic acid is preferably from 0,05 to 1% of the mixture. The hydroxyl groups of the polyoxymethylene produced may by alkylated or acylated. Acylation may be carried out using the lactone of isocrotonic acid or with acetic anhydride.
