Coal briquette prodn. by pressing in box mould - with progressively decreasing rate of compression

Prodn. of coal briquettes for use in coke ovens is carried out by compressing the coal in a box mould having elongated rigid side-walls, at least one of which moves inwards under applied pressure, with the improvement that the rate of advance of the side-wall decreases during the compression operation. Pref. the rate of advance is pref. initially 2-4 mm/sec. gradually decreasing to a final value of 0.1-0.2 mm/sec. The decrease in the rate of advance compensates for the normally occurring decrease in deep-seated compaction, so that adequate compaction can be achieved in acceptable pressing times.
