A device for periodically preheating and then discharging quicklime into a steel converter, comprises a kiln 1 fed with quicklime from a silo 2, and provided with liquid or gaseous burners 3. The fluid cooled kiln wall 9 is sealed at its lower end 9a by a base 4, mounted on a fluid cooled support tube 5 so as to be retractable on release of hydraulic or pneumatic pressure from space 8, to permit discharge of the quicklime from the kiln through annular exit aperture 17 to shoot 18. As they retract, the base 4 and support tube 5 are rotated by motor 12 through worm 13 and cog 14 to ensure even discharge of the material. The burners 3 are turned off during this discharge.</p> |
