4-Protected hydrox-2-cyclopentenones of formula (II): (where R is an eliminable-protecting gp. for the alcoholic OH gp.), e.g. 4-acetoxy-2-cyclopentenone, are prepd. by oxidising cpds. of formula (I) (R)- or (S)-trans cpds. of formula (I) are prepd. by reacting an (R)- or (S)-trans-diol of formula (III) with a suitable protecting gp.-forming agent, the diol being kept in stoichiometric excess in the reaction system. (II) are useful as intermediates for pharmaceuticals (esp. prostaglandins), agricultural chemicals and perfumes.
