The damper (7) is intended for retarding the closure movement of the throttle valve in a motor vehicle engine. It comprises a rod (8,20) which is slidable in a housing (15a,b) and is actuated by a vacuum-operated diaphragm (16) to move a stop limiting the closure movement of the throttle. The vacuum chamber (17) is arranged at the side (15b) of the housing through which the rod projects. The axial guide (21) of the rod at that point does not act as a vacuum seal as this is provided by an independent clamp ring (22). The annular diaphragm may have its inner and outer diameters sealed in the housing whilst the rod is secured (24 via 19) to it in an area between these diameters.
