The grease separator has a vessel (13) which tapers inwards at the bottom. Solid substances which have a higher specific gravity than water therefore collect above the flushing apparatus (37). If this is operated, the solids are conveyed through the cone (31) into the area of the second outlet orifice (29) which is somewhat higher than the first outlet orifice (27) through which the waste water normally flows off. However, because of the flushing, the water rises somewhat in the cone (31) so that the solid wastes are washed away through the second outlet orifice (27). The grease floating on the liquid surface (23), in normal operation and during flushing, is prevented from draining off through the outlet orifices (27 or 29) by the immersed plates (31). <IMAGE>
