The slug transports loose or fluid material and has at one end a filling and emptying aperture, which can be sealed shut. A self-closing valve (7,8) provides the slug sealing, and is held open by pressure (A) applied to it from the outside. The valve can comprise a spring-loaded plate, cone plug or ball. The filling station at the pneumatic post end can comprise a downwards-sloping section of the same length as the slug, which can be swung into a vertical position below a filler sliding up and down and equipped with a thruster to open the valve.
