PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase working efficiency in a manual feed mode, and to feed a paper sheet promptly without jam even if a sheet such as a compound paper is fed for a paper feeder capable of switching a consecutive paper feed mode and a manual feed mode. SOLUTION: A device loads paper sheets on a hopper 4c, and feeds a paper sheet manually or consecutively with a paper feeder roller 5 provided above. The device lifts up and down the hopper 4c, and enables a separation roller and a retard roller provided downstream preventing double feeding to drive for consecutive paper feed. The device lifts up and holds the hopper 4c in a position where a paper sheet can be nipped against the paper feeder roller 5, and simultaneously release the double feeding preventing action enabled by the separation roller and the retard roller for manual feed.
