The mechanism is intended for maintaining constant tension in wire strands as they come off braked spools and are together wound on to the surface of a pipe. The strands are guided over pulleys and come together on a collector pulley carried by a spring-loaded escapement lever which engages teeth on a hollow ratchet rod. A spring inside the rod acts on a slide which actuates a lever system to vary the brake pressure. The slide is pivotably connected to a swivel arm and a hydraulic damping cylinder is pivoted between this arm and the lever respectively.
