EXTENSION SHAFT LATCHING MECHANISM FOR A NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL ROD LIFT RIG A lift rig for lifting control rods from a nuclear reactor prior to its refueling. The lift rig includes a plurality of latching mechanisms which automatically latch to a control rod when the mechanism is lowered down around its top. Once latched, the mechanism will not release until an unlatching step is intentionally performed. The mechanism includes two concentric cylinders moveable relative to each other with a latch pivotally suspended therebetween. Relative movement of the cylinders causes the latch to move between a projecting, latched position and a retracted, unlatched position.
