An ultrasonically vibrating horn (9) is applied to the closure cap (1) to heat seal surfaces (5, 7) of the cap and container. The cap and/or container are of a thermoplastic material which, under the ultrasonic heating, softens. The softened sealing surfaces (5, 7) flow and mould into close conformity with the other sealing surface to produce a highly gas tight connection. The ultrasonic heating is discontinued before any welding of cap and container occurs. The resulting sealed container is suited for carbonated beverages. |
