The mechanism operates the seat belt on two door cars in such a way that the strap is kept clear of the door opening while the passenger enters the car and it is swung into readiness position by an arm after the car door has been closed. One end of the stap (9) is fixed to the retractor mechanism (11), its length (13) is led through a diverting fitting (12) and then through an eyelet (19) of an arm (18) swinging around a fulcrum (17). The arm is under the action of a spring attempting to swing the arm (18) into the door opening. The hub part of the arm (18) has a catch assembly comprising a spring loaded push rod (33) with one of its ends engaging in notches on the hub part of the arm (18) and the other end protruding from the car body.
