PURPOSE:To measure an ammonia component with high sensitivity by a gas chromatographic method, by detecting an ionic current generated by the reaction of the ammonia component with hydrocarbons by a flame thermionic detector. CONSTITUTION:A flame thermionic detector is used as a detector for gas chromatographic analysis. A separated ammonia component is introduced into the above described detector together with a carrier gas, and, at the same time, 0.05-10% by volume (preferably 0.4-1.2% by volume), relative to the carrier gas, of hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, propane and the like) is caused to be present in the detector thereby to detect an ionic current generated by the reaction of hydrocarbon molecules with ammonia molecules in the flame of an alkali source part of the detector. According to the above described method, it is possible to detect ammonia contained in various liquids or gases up to the order of several tens ppb. |
