The wood feed device has a chamber collecting short timber. There is a second independent feed device operating as a stationary long-timber channel parallel to this chamber. There are devices for holding timber down near the end walling of the short-timber chamber, while the opposite end has a scanning device emitting a control signal if the timber length is exceeded. This limits discharge mechanism thrust, and causes the holding devices to be lowered onto the partially forwarded short timber. This system enables either long or short timber to be worked after a very brief changeover interval.
