In a defect detection and compensation appatatus(30) for playing back a continuous picture signal, an FM detecting means was coupled to the lst & the 2nd means both generating impulse when an instantaneous frequency exceeds over of falls under the predetermined variation level for frequency band and an adder(37) responds to the output of the impulse genertor in order to generate a defect indication signal for declination of the instantaneous frequency from the variation level.
