The expansion joint for road slab supports has a tensioned metal leaf spanning the gap between the supports and bolted to them along the edge parallel to the joint. Two slab supports (A, B) have a gap between them (1) of thickness depending upon the coefficient of expansion of the supports, and the lef (2) is bolted to one of the slabs with the aid of an edge reinforcement (4) and threaded bolts and nuts (3). A special tool then stretches the leaf to fix it in tension to the other slab while the lealf has a central reinforcing strip (14) over the joint.
