PURPOSE:To manufacture the material described in the title, which is excellent in wear resistance and can be used even in corrosive atmosphere, by subjecting austenitic stainless steel to carburization and corrosion to form continuous intergranular corrosion layer. CONSTITUTION:An austenitic stainless steel sheet is first subjected to solution treatment and carburization to form a carburized layer. The thickness of the caburized layer is adjusted suitably by changing the treatment conditions, such as carburizing temp., carburizing time. Then the carburized steel sheet is immersed into, e.g., a boiling soln. of sulfuric acid and copper sulfate in order to be subjected to corrosion treatment, thereby manufacturing damping and sound-absorbing material 1. The material 1 is composed of corrosion layers 3, 3 formed on both sides of an uncorroded layer 2.
