A sulphurised compsn. is prepd. by reacting 0.7-1.2 g-atoms of S and 0.1-1.5 (0.4-1.25), esp. 0.4-0.8 moles H2S, with 1 mole of a 3-30C (3-16C), esp. 7C terminal aliphatic monoolefin, at 50-300 degrees C (100-200 degrees C) and under super atmos. pressure. Finally, allow boiling cpds., including unreacted olefin, mercaptan and monosulphide, are removed. The olefin may be substd., but olefinic, aliphatic hydrocarbons are pref. esp. (di)isobutene. After removal of low-boiling cpds., the prod. may be treated with an alkali metal sulphide to reduce active S. The compsn. is a lubricant additive, improving extreme pressure properties, and reducing wear and oxidn.
|
