The seal for an engine (11) crankshaft (10) has a radial seal ring (13) and a fabric packing ring (1a) on its outside. A system (24-26) continuously or periodically introduces a liquid lubricant into the packing ring (19). The metal casing (22) of the packing ring may contain one or more bores (26) for lubricant entry. The lubricated supply may be independent from the oil in the space (12) to be sealed, and may be pressurised. It may, alternatively, be taken from the engine oil in the crank case.
