Known postal-code-reading systems are practical only for mail items which have a strictly preassigned area for the postal code number. The present invention provides an improved automatic postal-code-number reading system in which the area occupied by the postal code numbers(which may be a relatively broad area) is first detected by a coarse scanning of the postal item, and then the detected area is finely scanned to recognize the postal code numbers.
