In order to give small dimensions to the vessel for wet sludge aeration and be able to use a single dewatering apparatus, a stepwise dewatering and a biological treatment in between is carried out. The fresh wet sludge for this purpose is dewatered by a dewatering apparatus (6) to a water content of at most 90% and the dewatered sludge is aerated in a wet sludge aeration vessel (2) in such a manner that temperatures in the sludge in the range from 40 to 75 DEG C occur as a result of the biological conversion process. The feed of fresh wet sludge to the dewatering apparatus (6) is interrupted. With the same dewatering apparatus (6), a defined amount of warm biologically treated sludge situated in the wet sludge aeration vessel (2) is dewatered to a water content of 80 to 55%. The dewatered sludge is then composted. The same process steps are repeated. <IMAGE>
