The coating composition consists of an aqueous preparation which contains the following three components: a polymeric binder, an inorganic pigment and a water-insoluble urea/formaldehyde polycondensation product, in a highly disperse form, of 1 mol of urea and 1.3 to 2 mol of formaldehyde. The condensation product has a mean particle diameter from 3 to 6 microns and a specific surface area from 3 to less than 5 or more than 8 to 12 m<2>/g. This composition gives coated papers which show an enhanced whiteness and improved printability.
